I was checking out a site (Lakeland Vacation Gear) for a friend that sells bike racks and car carriers. While the site was pretty well optimized for search engines I did found some issues and some items to tweak.

  • Validate the code. I use a W3 tool here: http://validator.w3.org It found 16 Errors, 20 warnings.
  • Meta Description is too long; Your meta description should be no more than 150 characters, your current meta description is 175 characters.
  • High Number Of Meta Keywords: The web page has 16 keywords in its metadata. About 10 is generally suggested.
  • Bike Racks seems to be the most frequent KW on google trends for the items sold. I would move that first in the text: “Specializing in Truck Tents, SUV Tents, Car Top Carriers and Bike Racks”
  • Same for the meta tags (bike racks was the #1 keyword in Google Trends of all their meta tag keywords)
  • Add A blog to the site and post to the blog at least weekly with content rich posts. SImilar to the guides that are there.
  • Use site tracking software to see where people are clicking, how long they are staying on pages and what paths they are taking on the site. (e.g. Google Analytics, StatCounter)
  • Perhaps there is someway to get listed manufacturer sites like Thule’s dealer locator. It doesn’t look like Thule pays too close attention to that page (broken images) so they probably won’t make it difficult to get placed and while it might not add much traffic it could increase page rank.
